iCON believes that “knowledge is power” if knowledge is shared in a timely, strategic and empowering way.
The Communication and Advocacy Program (CAP) is therefore devoted to analyzing the information needs of our constituency, collecting information and repackaging information into useful knowledge bites that can be utilized by leaders for self empowerment and the transformation of their communities.
Under this program, iCON is gradually developing an integral research function and equipping our constituency with skills to gather social data that warrants leadership action and to communicate effectively to policy makers.
All the beneficiaries of the four program areas are periodically brought together to participate in multi generational leadership dialogue, mentoring and activity collaborations. Through such dialogues and collaborations, this leadership community is slowly but surely laying the building blocks of a robust infrastructure that can facilitate and sustain the social transformation of our country and continent.
The following membership and advocacy spaces are under the CAP.
1. The Uganda Network of Women Entrepreneurs (UNWE) and the Icon Network of Young Entrepreneurs (INYE).
These intergenerational mentoring platforms for women and young people bring together social and business entrepreneurs. A key goal of these spaces is to raise the social consciousness of the private/corporate sector so as to engage more meaningfully in social transformation and to help the social sector apply good business practices in their work.
2. The Uganda Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) Working Group
Here civil society and private sector actors are provided with the opportunity to review the annual CSW themes in relation to Uganda’s performance in implementing the Beijing Platform for Action and other major international instruments on the advancement of girls and women.
3. “Men to Men” and “ Boyz to Men” against Gender Inequity and HIV/AIDS
Central to our work, is the total integration of gender concerns. iCON is part of a sub-regional initiative that is developing positive male leadership attitudes, beliefs and values to address gender inequality and inequities. Our Masculinity Training series now forms a core component of our Fellowship Program when working with boys and young men.
